What is Silt Fencing?
Silt fence is a temporary sediment control device used on construction sites to protect water quality in nearby streams, rivers, lakes and bays. A typical fence consists of a piece of synthetic filter fabric (also called a geotextile) stretched between a series of wooden or metal stakes. The stakes are installed on the downhill side of the fence, and the bottom edge of the fabric is trenched in the soil and backfilled on the uphill side. The fence is installed on a site before soil disturbance (earth moving) begins, down-slope from the disturbance area.
Some government jurisdictions in the United States recommend or require the use of a reinforced fence, sometimes called a "super" silt fence, on some construction sites. This design uses filter fabric reinforced by a wire mesh or chain link fence. The metal backing gives the fence increased strength to resist the weight of soil and water which may be trapped by the fence in a large drainage area, and also discourages construction site operators from driving vehicles over the fence.However, an improper installation of a super silt fence can create an inadvertent sediment basin if the filter fabric becomes clogged. This typically causes flooding, failure of the fence, and increased downsteam pollution.

Silt fences are perimeter controls, typically used in combination with sediment basins and sediment traps, as well as erosion controls, which are designed to retain sediment in place where soil is being disturbed by construction processes.

What is Turbidity Barrier?
Turbidity Barriers, Silt Barrier, Turbidity Curtains and silt curtain are designed specifically to contain and control the dispersion of turbidity and silt in a water body related to marine construction, pile driving, Site work (stormwater sheetflow)and dredging activities.
How to install Silt Fencing:
A proper silt fence installation is much more complex than people think - and more than manuals specify. In the past and in many areas today, silt fence is spoken about in one or two sentences and a couple of bullet points. Since it is rarely installed properly, people don't give it due credit nor understand its potential.
Properly installed silt fence is the most effective temporary sediment control device available. It can withstand concentrated flows (not to be confused with continuous flows), heavy winds, and potentially retain 18 inches of sediment - often times 10-20 tons of sediment per run of fence. It is relatively fast to install so it can go in on short notice, inexpensive, and the posts are recyclable.
However, it is somewhat better utilized for open construction and residential development sites than individual home lots under construction. For maximum effectiveness, any sediment retention device must filter sediment contained in runoff or pond water for deposition/sedimentation to occur, and that is harder to achieve on an individual lot with busy construction traffic.

What is Erosion Control?
Erosion control is the practice of preventing or controlling wind or water erosion in agriculture, land development and construction. This usually involves the creation of some sort of physical barrier, such as vegetation or rock, to absorb some of the energy of the wind or water that is causing the erosion. Effective erosion controls are important techniques in preventing water pollution and soil loss. They are often implemented in conjunction with sediment controls such as sediment basins and silt fences.
